The Audre Lorde Window Project
I am putting this quote: "I am deliberate and afraid of nothing," from Audre Lorde's poem "New Year's Day," in the windows of independent bookstores in NYC. As a writer, feminist, civil rights activist, and New York's Poet Laureate, Audre Lorde was a force to be reckoned with -- a voice for those who have been marginalized and oppressed. In our current political climate, with the rights of many at risk, her work feels as relevant as ever.
These windows are meant to engage our communities, to remind us that it is crucial to read widely and diversely, to support our women artists, writers of color, LGBTQ and immigrant voices. By engaging with these works, we become better educated, more thoughtful, more understanding, and often inspired.
If you're not sure where to start, a bookseller or librarian is the best person to ask. Now (and always) is the best time to support your independent bookstore.
Many, many thanks to WORD Brooklyn in Greenpoint (pictured above) for being the first participant. Community Bookstore in Park Slope is next!
